Makalu 2006 : First winter and solo ascent
Waiting at the base camp before the summit !

Jean-Christophe is now acclimated.  He’s waiting patiently for the weather to improve before launching his attack on Makalu’s summit, which should be the very first successful winter ascent of the fifth highest mountain on Earth!  Right now, Jean-Christophe is resting at BC after the huge effort of the last days made in hurricane winds…

There’s now cumulus in the sky; this is a sign of season’s change.  Cumulus are a consequence of those extreme winds blowing even at BC.

Here’s some other interesting facts: At 6900 m, the temperature - under the tent - was – 28 / - 30 °C.

Every three hours, Jean-Christophe tried to eat in order to compensate the lost of energy.  He happily ate «Montagne Noire» dry salt meat, a great source of calories, and dry fruits biological brownies (about 30 rations empty sealed), a sweet treat.

To eat at such altitudes is hard because you loose appetite and some aliments become kind of disgusting.  For this expedition, we focused for a year on bringing pleasing meats on the mountain.  Last night, January 16th, Jean-Christophe was to be on French tv news (20h00 news report) as he sent, in the morning, video footage.

See you soon! Katia
